Every spring in Japan, from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south, millions gather beneath blooming cherry trees to celebrate hanami, the centuries-old tradition of appreciating the fleeting beauty of sakura. For just a few short weeks, parks fill with families and friends sharing food and drinks beneath pale pink blossoms before the petals disappear almost as quickly as they arrived.

In 2021, Suntory captured that same sense of seasonality in whisky.

The result was Hibiki Blossom Harmony, an annual limited edition that has become one of the distillery's most sought-after modern releases. More than simply a new label, Blossom Harmony introduced a rare component never before seen in the Hibiki range: whisky finished in sakura wood casks. Combined with beautifully illustrated packaging, the series has evolved into an annual celebration of spring.

Hibiki has always represented harmony. Not only in flavour, but in philosophy. Since its introduction in 1989, the blend has combined malt and grain whiskies from Suntory's Yamazaki, Hakushu and Chita distilleries into a whisky renowned for its elegance.

To create the Blossom Harmony release, Suntory begins with the familiar style of Hibiki before incorporating a rare whisky that has undergone additional maturation in sakura wood casks. The result is a whisky that retains Hibiki's signature character while introducing the actual flavour of the cherry blossom trees.

For centuries, sakura has symbolised the beauty and impermanence of life. Because the blossoms bloom for only a brief period before falling, they have become closely associated with mono no aware—the Japanese appreciation for the fleeting nature of beautiful moments.

Every spring, millions participate in hanami, gathering beneath flowering cherry trees to celebrate family, friendship and the arrival of a new season.

Suntory didn't simply decorate a bottle with cherry blossom imagery. Instead, the company incorporated sakura into the whisky itself.
Sakura is an unusual wood for whisky maturation. Unlike American oak or European oak, it is rarely used because of its scarcity and distinctive character. Rather than overwhelming the whisky, sakura casks contribute elegant floral notes, soft sweetness and a refined aromatic lift that complements Hibiki's delicate style.

The inaugural Blossom Harmony marked the first time Suntory incorporated sakura cask-finished whisky into the Hibiki range. Released in Japan during the spring of 2021, it immediately distinguished itself from standard Hibiki Japanese Harmony with an elegant floral profile and beautifully illustrated gift packaging inspired by cherry blossom season.

Collectors quickly recognised it as something special. While many assumed it would be a one-off seasonal bottling, demand proved so strong that Suntory established Blossom Harmony as an annual release.

The second edition cemented Blossom Harmony as an annual series. More importantly for collectors outside Japan, Suntory expanded distribution into key international markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and parts of Europe.

Although the blend remained true to the original concept, many whisky enthusiasts experienced Blossom Harmony for the first time through the 2022 release, making it one of the best-known editions in the series.

By its third release, Blossom Harmony had become one of the most anticipated annual launches in Japanese whisky.

Collectors now expected a new bottle every spring, and attention increasingly shifted towards the artwork as much as the whisky itself. Each edition maintained the familiar floral character while presenting a completely new design celebrating Japanese decorative arts.
The 2023 release also coincided with heightened global interest in Suntory during the company's centenary celebrations, further increasing visibility for the Hibiki brand.

The 2024 edition continued the now well-established formula while introducing one of the series' most intricate package designs. Inspired by traditional Japanese motifs—including elements associated with kintsugi, paulownia, bamboo, phoenix imagery and peonies—the presentation reinforced Blossom Harmony's reputation as both a whisky and a work of art.

By this point, many collectors had shifted from buying individual bottles to building complete vertical collections.

The 2025 edition featured elegant peacock and peony-inspired artwork, continuing the tradition of pairing seasonal symbolism with Japanese craftsmanship. By now, Blossom Harmony had firmly established itself alongside annual releases such as Yamazaki Limited Edition and Hakushu Limited Edition as one of Suntory's flagship collector series.

Released in May 2026, the sixth annual edition preserves every hallmark of Blossom Harmony: the familiar Hibiki blend enhanced with sakura cask-finished whisky, bottled at 43% ABV, presented in newly commissioned artwork inspired by traditional Japanese lucky motifs. Six consecutive annual releases have transformed what began as an experiment into one of the defining modern collectible series in Japanese whisky.
